Maximilian Hotel: Prague, Czech Republic

The rooms at Maximilian Hotel are nicely proportioned and designed in a combination of Modernism and contemporary, with an abundance of wood, glass, and chrome.  Think elegant clean lines with soundproofed windows, wall-length framed mirrors in both the bedroom and bathroom and a rainfall shower head.

There’s a nice amount of storage space with built-in nooks alongside the headboard and sleek dark wood wardrobes with beautiful nickel hardware and fittings.

Decorated in a palette of browns and grays and accented with crisp white sheets and white sheers and a boldly blue bedcover, the rooms are calming and soothing and functional – and deeply relaxing, all night long.

Public Spaces

An homage to Pierre Chareau’s Parisian “maison de verre,” with a library and a drawing room, both elegant and comfortable.  Slate floors and gray carpets, with ebony chairs in gray wool.  An honor bar with all combination of cocktail necessities as well as a smartly-efficient espresso machine.

Breakfast

A full buffet of both hot and cold choices, all well-presented and delicious, particularly a dark multi-grain bread, and also the homemade granola, and the fresh mozzarella with virgin olive oil, served in an atrium-like room with views onto a boxwood terrace.

Staff

Accommodating.  Without being overly-solicitous or in-your-face, the staff is both professional and charming whenever confronted with a request.  There’s a respect for the distance between guest and employee.  Umbrellas were forthcoming without question and cabs were waiting, as was the car for transport to the airport.  Furthermore, the concierge secured two tenth-row tickets to the new and sold-out production of Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre.

Location

Right where you want to be, within walking distance of the tourist sites, but out of the thick of it, in a neighborhood filled with good restaurants and lounges and well-known retailers.

Overview

The Maximilian provides the level of hospitality and care that many boutique hotels aspire to – at about half the price.  This is the sort of place where the final morning’s bill doesn’t fill you with remorse.  You’re going to miss that daily breakfast – and also the in-house Thai spa with its extremely competent massage therapists, and that deeply relaxing floatation centre.  Reason enough, right there, to consider booking a return visit to the Maximilian.
