With its neon green shamrock sign, it\u2019s easy to mistake Clarke\u2019s for yet another Irish burger-and-beer joint or a Cheers<\/em> wannabe.\u00a0 The mistake, however, would be in not moving beyond the signage\u2014and missing the inviting interior and genuine conviviality of this South of Fifth local favorite.<\/p>\n

Open since September 2005, and located within spitting distance of Joe\u2019s Stone Crab, Clarke\u2019s embodies the restaurant\u2019s motto C\u00e9ad m\u00edle f\u00e1ilte<\/em>, an Irish greeting meaning “a hundred thousand welcomes.”\u00a0 Of course, owner Laura Cullen is a woman raised in her father\u2019s Greenwich Village landmark restaurant Sazerac House, so it\u2019s perhaps not surprising that Clarke\u2019s looks to linger in the nabe\u2019s embrace as long as Joe\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Not unlike one of those British Empire outposts (such as the Hog Penny in Hamilton, Bermuda, for example) Clarke\u2019s has the requisite mahogany bar and mirrors\u2014as well as upholstered benches and black and white prints of old Miami.\u00a0 It\u2019s a linen napkin pub, with charming floral arrangements by local florist Flower Bazaar on every table.<\/p>\n

There are also television screens above the bar\u2014and between the animated conversations of sports fans and chairs scraping across the stone floor, the acoustics can be daunting.\u00a0 Give in to the din, however, and order a pint of Guinness\u2014as well as an order of Parmesan truffle fries that arrive piping hot in a folded linen napkin.<\/p>\n

The food at Clarke\u2019s might be called Irish-American comfort; appetizers include mac-and-cheese, corn chowder, a wedge salad and a chopped salad, all of them done better even than you might remember your mother\u2019s versions, or those served at the local country club.\u00a0 Sides include the aforementioned fries (also available in traditional or curry) as well as garlicky wilted spinach, and just about the best oven roasted Brussels sprouts you\u2019ll find in South Beach.<\/p>\n

For dessert, there\u2019s Clarke\u2019s bread pudding souffl\u00e9, with Jameson Irish Whiskey sauce\u2014a deliciously light ending to a meal that might have you thinking about another Guinness, or perhaps a wee bit of that Jameson\u2019s on the side.\u00a0 Here\u2019s to the Irish in South Beach\u2014and to the luck of all of us who find ourselves dining at Clarke\u2019s.<\/p>\n
