Pastel and chintz\u2014very Mario Buatta, circa 1983.\u00a0 And yet, even so, the d\u00e9cor is still effective\u2014if you give in to it\u2014for it\u2019s been well cared for and well preserved, and in some ways, the rooms are evocative of the bedrooms of certain Southampton dowagers.\u00a0 Think Lilly Pulitzer colors and Bermuda interior design\u2014but don\u2019t overlook the spaciousness of the rooms, with their large bathrooms and a separate WC.\u00a0 All very comforting in a Waspy kind of way.<\/p>\n

Public Spaces<\/em><\/p>\n

Think 1980s\u2014when John Portman\u2019s glass-elevator lobby atriums were at the peak of their popularity.\u00a0 There\u2019s a pet macaw named Merlot and rock gardens amidst a bubbling stream and lots of earth toned leather furniture\u2014and all this bounty awaiting after you pass through the gated guardhouse and drive by the VIP helipad and cruise along the lavishly landscaped grounds before you hit reception where they greet you with a glass of champagne.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re talking 750 rooms in an 18-story pyramidal tower\u2014but moreover we\u2019re talking 1500 acres with horse trails, golf courses, tennis courts, private lake, nature trails\u2014as well as a half-acre 800,000 gallon pool, complete with waterfalls, water slide, pedestrian rope bridge, and a 50-yard-long cave through which you swim from one pool to the other.<\/p>\n

In May 2008, plans were announced for a $65 million makeover of the property\u2014in order to keep the Grand Cypress at the top of the Orlando five-star resort heap.<\/p>\n

Breakfast<\/em><\/p>\n

Served in the Cascade dining room\u2014but service had ended by the time we straggled downstairs.<\/p>\n

Staff<\/em><\/p>\n

Very Disney corporate\u2014or is that Orlando corporate?\u2014with that happy-to-serve smile.\u00a0 Everything\u2019s always swell\u2014at least according to the employees\u2019 faces and their responses to any queries.\u00a0 Perhaps it\u2019s enforced, but it also comes across as sincere.\u00a0 Give in to it\u2014and let them serve you, happily.<\/p>\n

Location<\/em><\/p>\n

Situated a stone\u2019s throw, literally, from Disney World and its manicured lawns\u2014in a setting equally pristine and sumptuous.\u00a0 Still, you can remain at the Grand Cypress and imagine yourself almost anywhere other than the world of Disney\u2014or you can partake of Disney and feel you\u2019re right next door.\u00a0 It\u2019s a sanctuary away from the maelstrom, but convenient enough to it, should you desire.<\/p>\n

Overview<\/em><\/p>\n

A full-service, five-star resort, the Grand Cypress evokes the kind of privilege associated with that long line of illustrious hotels such as Waikiki\u2019s Royal Hawaiian or Hamilton\u2019s Princess\u2014those matriarchal hotels that stand off a bit from the hoi polloi (and their amusements) to create their own self-contained worlds.\u00a0 Even the children seem to be from another era\u2014one where they speak with near formality and politesse.<\/p>\n

In short, the Grand Cypress is the sort of place that while wandering the grounds, you might pause to observe a young egret walking ever so delicately along the shore in search of dinner. And in the evening\u2019s hush, that\u2019s all you\u2019ll hear: the evening\u2019s hush.<\/p>\n
