When a friend invites you to dine at The Metropolitan Club<\/a>, one of Stanford White\u2019s architectural masterpieces and one of New York\u2019s most pedigreed private social clubs, you don\u2019t hesitate to say yes\u2014even when the meal in question is an early breakfast and you\u2019re a night owl\u2014because said breakfast is in honor of The Fragrance Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Founded with the mission to inspire the public toward a greater appreciation and passion for fragrance, The Fragrance Foundation is a non-profit organization currently headed by\u00a0Linda G. Levy<\/a> who hosted the third annual The Creatives 2018<\/a> fragrance forum.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s panelists included Aerin Lauder<\/a>, founder of AERIN<\/a> and Style & Image Director for Est\u00e9e Lauder<\/a>, who was joined on the dais of crimson leather chairs by Karyn Khoury, a senior advisor for Est\u00e9e Lauder, and Honorine Blanc<\/a>, Master Perfumer at Firmenich<\/a>, whose olfactory oeuvre of best-selling fragrances includes many Aerin Collection favorites.\u00a0 Given that these three women have worked together closely for many years, moderator Jane Larkworthy<\/a>, the former executive beauty editor of W<\/em> magazine, had only to toss out a few choice bon mots<\/em> for the trio of fragrance executives to impart lessons learned from their cumulative decades of insider beauty knowledge.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what we took away.<\/p>\n

Listen to Your Grandmother<\/em><\/strong>: Upon arrival outside the ballroom at the Metropolitan Club, guests were greeted by the sight of a massive dining table laden with enough fragrance to freshen the entire MTA. According to Lauder, the fragrance smorgasbord evoked her grandmother Est\u00e9e\u2019s dressing table: a cornucopia of beauty product that Est\u00e9e Lauder would offer to those around her\u2014family, friends, doormen, taxi drivers\u2014in order to get their honest assessment of what she was about to place on the market.<\/p>\n

In other words, listen\u2014to everyone\u2014and learn.<\/p>\n

Smell the Lilacs<\/em><\/strong>: Lauder wanted to do a lilac fragrance and Khoury, who had worked with Est\u00e9e for years, agreed that the time might be right for lilac\u2019s return. Lilac hadn\u2019t been introduced in a new way for years\u2014perhaps suffering from a slight ageist stigma\u2014but nonetheless, they went for it. The result? Lilac Path<\/a>, which became one of Aerin Collection\u2019s best-selling fragrances.<\/p>\n

The lesson? Follow your nose\u2014and take a leap of faith.<\/p>\n

Let It Go<\/em><\/strong>: When Khoury worked with Est\u00e9e, there were often late-night phone calls; with Aerin, there have been Sunday night emails, one of which began, \u201cPlease don\u2019t kill me.\u201d\u00a0 Right before a product\u2019s launch, after months of research and development, Lauder was having second thoughts. Something wasn\u2019t right\u2014and so, they let it go.<\/p>\n

If it doesn’t feel right for the brand, then let it go\u2014no matter how late in the game.<\/p>\n

Hugging Your Son (Is Good for Business)<\/em><\/strong>: As a young mother, Lauder would hug her son tightly before sending him off to his pre-school classroom. In those years, Lauder was working on Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia<\/a>, a new iteration of her grandmother\u2019s Private Collection<\/a>\u2014and wearing her fragrances like her grandmother, fine-tuning them before release.<\/p>\n

After months of hugging her son each morning, her son\u2019s teacher asked to speak with her about her son. Lauder feared the worst\u2014disruption in the classroom, misbehavior\u2014until the teacher sat her down and told her that her son had the most delicious smell. All the teachers agreed. Relieved, Lauder realized that the teacher was smelling the new Private Collection on her son\u2014from her morning hugs.<\/p>\n

Which meant that the fragrance was working\u2014or, in other words, hugging your son is good for business.<\/p>\n

Be Inspired by (Most) Travel<\/em><\/strong>: For many years, Lauder has vacationed in the South of France, which she evoked in the fragrance Mediterranean Honeysuckle<\/a>. Other Aerin fragrances celebrate Monet\u2019s gardens at Giverny and the mystical scents of Tangier.<\/p>\n

That said, however, a visit to your son\u2019s college dorm is not likely to result in a fragrance best-seller.<\/p>\n

If You Change Your Clothes<\/em><\/strong>: As Lauder reminded her audience, it was her grandmother Est\u00e9e\u2019s belief that if you changed outfits for dinner, then why not change your fragrance as well?<\/p>\n
