What a joy and what an honor to be selected for the Longlist for the Granum Foundation Prize — and I can't help but feel that, somehow, this honor is connected to my mother Roxanne who passed this week at the age of 93. Thank you, @granum_foundation — and Mom.

Who wouldn’t be happy biking on Governors Island, the island that time forgot, where the past comes into view with immediate clarity, a mixture of architecture from centuries past, and there, just across the water, is 21st-century Manhattan in all its shimmering glory.

Wequassett is a Wampanoag word meaning “crescent on the water”—and each year, for centuries, the Wampanoag people used the crescent moon of the vernal equinox to return from the forests to the crescent-shaped shoreline along the “elbow” of Cape Cod. Once you surrender to Wequassett’s serenity, it’s easy to understand why.

“Naked nature,” wrote Thoreau when he walked thirty miles along Outer Beach on Cape Cod in 1849 — and that’s exactly what you find today when you leave behind Wequassett on Pleasant Bay and head to Outer Beach where there’s nothing but nature. It’s enough to make you attempt a cartwheel.

VOTE! Amidst all the celebratory joy, queer joy, and defiant joy of this year’s NYC Pride, certainly one of the most important messages was this one: VOTE!

It matters.

One of the most legendary concerts at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House occurred on October 6, 1974 when Labelle raised the roof off the opera house—and last night’s sold-out concert at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center brought together Nona Hendryx and Patti Labelle (and the spirit of Sarah Dash) alongside spectacular guest artists for a reprise of that revolutionary concert and a reminder of the power of the prophets.

Ever since he was 11 years old, the three-star Michelin chef Nacho Manzano has claimed the kitchen as his favorite place, and now that he has a kitchen at Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel, he’s treating his guests to his signature 11-course tasting menu paired with wines from the Douro Valley.

New York’s Town Hall was created by a suffragist, thereby making the midtown theatre a perfect venue for last night’s celebratory Rise Up, Sing Out, A Concert for the First Amendment.

You know you’re fighting on the right side when Patti Smith and Rufus Wainwright are beside you.

You know you’re gonna win when you’ve got Bette Midler and Robert DeNiro on your side.

You know you’re on the right side of history when you’re marching with Jane Fonda, Joy Reid, Julia Roberts, Lily Gladstone, Tessa Thompson, Sasha Allen, and millions of other Americans who believe in democracy.

As De Niro stated, “I want to love my country again. I want my country back.” Amen to that.

You land in Lisbon and you eat—and you drink and you sing, and laugh and celebrate Pride, because as the Portuguese say, “They work in Porto, but they play in Lisbon.”

Art for the people. That’s the m.o. of Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City where all performances are free or “choose what you pay”—and all the more reason to celebrate with John Legend and Alice Smith and Misty Copeland and Thelma Golden at the annual Lincoln Center Summer Gala.

The dress code was simply “Glam Chic Marbella,” which was further explained as “effortlessly elegant and polished with a relaxed confidence rather than overt formality, a sense of shine and visual impact, expressed with restraint and impeccable taste, sun-kissed, summery, and chic, with a result that is confidently styled with a distinctive memorable detail.” No problem, right? And, in the end, it wasn’t, because even the staircases and the plated food and the flowers followed the directive and turned it out for the rebirth of Don Carlos Marbella.

In Marbella, there’s a ‘dolce vita’ vibe that allows you to feel like these are still the good times, and that the ocean’s waves are a reminder of the beauty of life, and that amidst all the world’s trials, there’s still reason to celebrate.

In Marbella, the party never ends, it just moves to another location, and in this case, the Marbella opening of Manero, Madrid’s wildly fabulous and iconic restaurant founded by Carlos Bosch where the “Dolce Vita Mediterránea” is way more than merely a soundtrack that keeps you moving through the night.
