Montreal’s Lola Rosa

IMG_0033

The vibe at Lola Rosa is not unlike a rock-n-roll canteen in some bohemian capital from the Sixties. Silkscreens of Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix gaze beneficently over the rosewood tables, bestowing their countercultural blessings on a vegan and vegetarian restaurant self-defined as the one “preferred by non-vegetarians.”

For more than a decade, Lola Rosa has fed students and faculty at McGill University, earning accolades for its laidback atmosphere and specialties such as nachos and vegan poutine.

Servers at the newest locale on Park Avenue are animated and ebullient, pleased to be serving you fresh food that everyone happily devours. A lip-smacking hempburger is made with chia, tofu, and lentils and stacked with caramelized onions, guacamole, tomato, pickle, cheese, and homemade barbeque sauce, all served with chickpea fries on a wooden cutting board. The chickpea fries come with vegan tamari mayo, which means that you can dip without guilt.

Desserts include cheesecake in a Mason jar and a ginger-basil crème brûlée, as well as a molten brownie with vanilla ice cream.

Small wonder that Lola Rosa is packed with happy people.
